Spring 1995, Vol. 4, No. 1

President's letter: Spring 1995

By Jeffrey Kahn, MD

The January annual meeting in New Orleans-well attended and well received-is nicely reported in this issue of The Bulletin. Thanks again to Tom Valk (McLean, VA) and Alan McLean (Westport, CT) for their efforts. Brian Grant (Seattle, WA), with help from Len Sperry (Milwaukee, WI), continues to do a terrific job with the The Bulletin.

AOOP cosponsored a March 1995 meeting of the New York Academy of Medicine on "Workplace Violence: Preventive and Interventive Strategies." Gerry Kraines (Boston, MA) spoke about the value of requisite organizational structure. AOOP members will present at the April ACOEM meetings. AOOP will also be a collaborating organization for a meeting on "Work, Stress and Health '95: Creating Healthier Workplaces," cosponsored by NIOSH and the American Psychological Association (9/13-16/95) in Washington, D.C. Already accepted from AOOP members are a half-day workshop on psychiatric disability (Don Williams), and a symposium (me) on organizational and occupational psychiatric approaches to distressed employees.

With help from Mark Unterberg (Dallas, TX), papers from our 1994 meeting on "Psychopathology and Organizational Crisis" are scheduled for April publication in the Psychiatric Annals. AOOP is preparing two position papers (Chris Flynn, Tampa, FL; Marie-Claude Rigaud, Aurora, IL; Seth Aidinoff, New York, NY), possibly in collaboration with ACOEM. We are looking for some additional financial support for distribution of these papers to the media and corporate communities. Steve Heidel (San Diego, CA) found a large group of disability managers who were eager to have our 1994-95 Membership Directory. Japanese and Australian psychiatric groups with similar interests have contacted AOOP.

AOOP's effectiveness continues to benefit from members' contributions and initiative. Send us your suggestions, projects or ideas for AOOP, yourself, or other members. Thanks to everyone for all of their efforts!
