OOP Bulletin ArchivesWinter 1997, Vol. 6, No. 2From the editor: Winter 1997By Len Sperry, M.D., Ph.D.Organizational and occupational psychiatrists were among the first to distinguish themselves in the specialty of medical disability and stress-disability evaluation. A new horizon over the disability landscape is coming into clear view these days. It is being called disability management consultation by some, and disability management systems consultation by others. This development is so promising that the entire issue of Organizational and Occupational Psychiatry is being devoted to the topic. Three articles approach the consultation process from three perspectives: the whole organization, the worker as a reflection of the organization, and the worker as a dynamic entity within the organization. Disability-proofing the workplace looks at this emerging area from the perspective of consultation to an entire organization. Disabled Workers: Personality, Organizational and Treatment Factors by Don Williams, M.D., OOP's Contributing Editor, approaches disability management from the perspective of the clinician-consultant who is organizationally-conscious and clinically sophisticated in group treatment methods. Finally, our book review essay of Martin Kantor, M.D.'s book, Occupational Disorders, describes a clinical approach to managing disability in an individual therapy context. I trust you will find these articles useful and informative.
